IN THE NEWS
Greenlane (TSX:GRN) is a pioneer in the rapidly emerging renewable natural gas (RNG) industry. We work with waste producers, gas utilities, and project developers to turn low-value biogas into a valuable low-carbon and carbon-negative clean energy resource. As a leading global provider of biogas upgrading systems, we are helping to clean up two of the largest and most difficult-to-decarbonize sectors of the global energy system: the natural gas grid and the commercial transportation sector.
Greenlane is a pure play in the RNG space, offering multiple core biogas upgrading technologies, in use and proven in the industry today. Biogas upgrading sales are forecasted by industry to grow at a minimum 30% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next five years in North America and Europe. Our demonstrated leadership in biogas upgrading, scope and breadth of product offerings, and over 35 years of industry experience are fierce competitive advantages.
Today, we are a trusted partner globally and are ranked number one in installed capacity, having sold over 140 biogas upgrading systems into 19 countries and counting. We’ve learned a lot along the way. First to market in 12 of the 19 countries where our systems have been sold, we’re also proud to have supplied the systems for many of the largest RNG production facilities in the world.

According to a new report from Wood Mackenzie, the RNG market saw tremendous growth in 2022, with 60 million ft3/d of new production capacity added. Wood Mackenzie’s report,”North American renewable natural gas: state of the market”, states that the number of RNG projects has doubled in the last five years and 66 future projects were announced in 2022. In total, the North American market size sits at 385 million ft3/d, with states such as Texas (62 million ft3/d), California (33 million ft3/d) and Pennsylvania (33 million ft3/d), leading the way. Despite the recent growth, the RNG market currently only makes up 0.5% of the North American natural gas market. Nevertheless, with continued policy support and technology development, Wood Mackenzie projects it will grow to 3% of the market by 2050, for a total of 4 billion ft3/d.
Texas-based Waste Management (WM) has opened a US$35 million RNG facility at the company’s sprawling Eco Vista landfill south of Arbor Acres Avenue in Springdale, Arkansas. According to WM, the landfill gas-to-energy facility beneficially utilizes the biogas generated when organic material decomposes in a landfill. The Eco Vista facility spans 14,430 square feet. It is expected to recover and distribute approximately 750,000 metric million British thermal units (mmBtu) per year of RNG, which could serve the equivalent of 25,000 households annually or 650 heavy-duty vehicles. WM will allocate a portion of the RNG for its U.S. fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. WM plans about 20 additional RNG projects and intends to spend about US$1.2 billion on renewable energy projects between 2022 and 2026.
