European industries release urgent call for EU leaders for fast biomethane rollout as a driver of competitiveness, energy security and defossilisation
The signatories of the Joint Biomethane Declaration, leading European industry associations, are calling for biomethane to become a central building block of the EU’s reindustrialisation, energy security, and transition to climate neutrality. The Declaration sends a clear signal of strong industrial demand for biomethane, essential to keep EU industry competitive while enabling defossilisation and more circular production processes.
European industry is under mounting pressure from high energy prices and rising carbon costs, with some sectors already facing production cuts and closures. With 22 bcm of combined biogas and biomethane produced in Europe today, sustainable biomethane offers immediate, scalable relief, integrating seamlessly into existing energy systems and gas infrastructure. Produced domestically, it strengthens energy independence and reduces Europe’s exposure to global gas market volatility, at a time when the EU still imports around 90% of its gas.

India Expands Use of Compressed Biogas to Reduce Natural Gas Imports
In March 2026, Vadodara Gas Ltd (VGL), a joint venture between GAIL Gas and the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, announced plans to increase its use of compressed biogas (CBG) within its gas distribution network. The company currently injects approximately 5,000 kg of CBG daily and is evaluating an increase of 1,000–1,500 kg per day to meet growing demand and reduce reliance on imported natural gas.
The move reflects broader efforts in India to scale domestically produced renewable gas as part of energy security and sustainability strategies. By leveraging organic waste to produce CBG, the initiative supports both emissions reduction and circular economy objectives while providing a cleaner alternative to conventional natural gas in urban energy systems.

EPA finalizes update to the Renewable Fuel Standard with more favorable biogas terms
The agency announced it had locked in the requirements for the Renewable Fuel Standard through 2027. It tweaked its proposal released last summer, but kept decisions like a penalty for foreign fuels.
The U.S. EPA finalized its update to the Renewable Fuel Standard on Friday after a monthslong review process. The rule includes higher renewable volume obligation requirements for cellulosic biofuels than the agency had proposed in a draft last summer — a key ask from the biogas industry.

U.S. Farms More Than Double Biogas Capture Over Five Years
As the United States recognizes National Agriculture Month, the American Biogas Council (ABC) today released new data showing U.S. farms are capturing 166% more biogas — a source of energy created by recycling organic waste like manure and food scraps — than they were just five years ago.
According to the ABC, 631 farms today operate biogas capture systems — more than double the number in 2020. Those farms can produce over 61 million MMBtu of energy annually, compared to about 23 million MMBtu five years ago.
