Canada Issues New Regulations to Reduce Methane Emissions
The Canadian government released final methane emissions regulations on December 16, 2025, aimed at cutting methane releases from both the oil & gas sector and municipal landfills. Under the new rules, operators of large landfills must monitor surface emissions, methane recovery wells, and control equipment, with a strict timeline for detecting and repairing leaks. The regulations prohibit venting of landfill gas and require that any recovered methane must be destroyed or used, helping prevent a potent greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere. Landfills contribute roughly 17 % of Canada’s methane emissions, and this action is expected to significantly reduce national greenhouse gas outputs while supporting broader climate goals.
In addition to regulatory requirements, the Canadian government is investing $16 million in methane measurement, reporting, and mitigation research to accelerate innovation in emission reduction technologies. Officials believe these measures will not only reduce methane substantially between 2026 and 2040 but also create market opportunities for methane capture and utilization solutions like RNG upgrading, monitoring technologies, and leak detection systems — all areas where technology providers can play a key role in supporting compliance and achieving net-zero targets.

Denver and Waste Management Partner to Launch Colorado’s First Landfill-to-RNG Facility
The City and County of Denver and Waste Management (WM) announced plans to develop Colorado’s first landfill gas-to-RNG facility at the Arapahoe Disposal Site landfill. The project will capture methane emissions and upgrade the gas into renewable natural gas suitable for pipeline injection, supporting Denver’s climate action goals and reducing one of the city’s largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with operations targeted for 2027.
This collaboration highlights the increasing role municipalities are playing in advancing RNG infrastructure. By converting landfill methane into a usable energy product, cities can turn regulatory obligations into long-term environmental and economic value while strengthening local clean-energy supply.

World Biogas Association Highlights Global Policy Momentum and Biogas Advances in December 2025
In December 2025, the World Biogas Association (WBA) released its Chief Executive’s Monthly Update covering key global developments that reinforce the role of biogas and renewable gases such as RNG in climate action and energy transitions. At the heart of the update was the India Congress 2025, held in New Delhi, which brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and technical experts to chart a coordinated path toward scaling biogas deployment and establishing a national biogas mission—an integrated approach to unify programs and unlock investment across waste, agriculture, and energy sectors. WBA also highlighted its contributions to policy frameworks such as the 4× Belém Pledge, which aims to quadruple the use of sustainable fuels by 2035, and progress with the GHG Protocol (GHGP) and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to better reflect renewable gases in greenhouse-gas accounting.
These developments signal strengthening global recognition of RNG and biogas as not only viable renewable energy solutions but critical components of national and regional climate strategies. From progress on policy alignment and emissions accounting to strategic partnerships in India and Brazil, the update reflects how biogas is increasingly acknowledged as a mainstream solution for reducing methane emissions, enhancing energy security, and fostering circular economies. For companies like Greenlane, such policy signals enhance market certainty and create fertile conditions for expanded deployment of RNG systems worldwide.

Canadian Biogas Association: 2025 Biogas Insights Report
The Canadian Biogas Association’s 2025 Biogas Insights Report provides a national snapshot of biogas/RNG project momentum and—importantly—notes that a Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) amendments discussion paper was published in December 2025, with the CBA engaged throughout the process.
The report also flags a key market challenge: Canada continues to lag U.S. incentives, even while over $1B in near-term domestic biogas/RNG projects are positioned to advance if policy support becomes more competitive.
