Greenlane Update, April 2025

Welcome to our monthly recap, where we combine the latest in the RNG industry with exclusive Greenlane Renewables updates, as we collectively navigate the path to a more sustainable future.

Some great industry developments are at work as we continue to cover the RNG space!

Greenlane Product News

Greenlane remains active at industry gatherings, creating connection points for potential clients to discover our cutting-edge solutions. In a single week, our representatives spanned both northern and southern hemispheres, with booths at Quebec's RNG Forum and Brazil's 7th South Brazilian Biogas and Biomethane Forum from April 8-10. In mid-April, our team collaborated with the RNG Coalition to showcase our Cascade H2S technology in a well-attended industry webinar. We wrapped up April exhibiting at Biogas Americas in Denver (April 28-30), highlighting our Cascade H2S product and previewing the upcoming Cascade LF solution slated for September release.

Biogas Industry Launches Ad Campaign Highlighting Untapped Domestic Energy and Economic Potential

As Congress prepares to deliberate critical clean energy tax provisions, the American Biogas Council (ABC) has launched an online advertising campaign to spotlight the power of biogas facilities to convert waste into fuel, electricity, and economic opportunity.

The campaign, which began today in Washington, DC, and will air for the next two months as the debate intensifies, aims to raise awareness among lawmakers, policymakers, and the public about the versatility of biogas systems to turn organic waste – from farms, food production, landfills and wastewater – into reliable energy.

“Biogas is the only energy solution that recycles our growing waste problem into a growing energy resource,” said Patrick Serfass, Executive Director of the American Biogas Council. “At a time when Americans need more power and domestic fuels, biogas offers a reliable source of both renewable fuel and baseload electricity, while reducing waste and creating jobs and economic growth across the nation.”

Iowa Landfills Capture Methane and Convert It to Usable Natural Gas

When household waste decomposes at a landfill, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that traps significantly more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires that large landfills monitor and capture the gas, but some landfills in Iowa are going a step further and “upgrading” the landfill gas into renewable natural gas.

John Foster, the board president of the Iowa Society of Solid Waste Operations, said this process can make economic sense for a landfill and provide an environmental impact during a time when “there’s an energy crisis around the corner.”

Landfills that upgrade their gas end up shifting their wells into what Foster called a “production” model that captures far more methane and carbon dioxide than what is required for compliance with the Clean Air Act.

According to the EPA, landfills account for 17% of overall U.S. methane emissions and the agency holds that renewable natural gas and other gas upgrading processes help to reduce the amount of methane emitted.

Reasons for Biogas Optimism Despite Global Challenges

The first four months of 2025 have been among the most turbulent in recent history in terms of global investor and market confidence. However, despite this – and despite emerging differences in environmental policy objectives around the world, there are still signs anaerobic digestion (AD) will continue to play a key role in boosting energy security, tackling climate change, and managing organic wastes.

The global biogas market was estimated to be worth USD 65.53 billion in 2024 and is projected to expand 4.2% per year between 2025 and 2032(1). To help ensure that this growth is delivered, the World Biogas Association (WBA) recently launched two online tools to help governments speed up the deployment of (AD) to meet 2030 climate targets and reduce methane emissions.(2) According to the WBA, biogas could deliver up to 50% of the Global Methane Pledge and mitigate between 10% and 13% of total global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

According to the American Biogas Council (ABC), the United States saw another record year for biogas in 2024 with a 13% year-on-year growth in biogas capacity and a 40% y-o-y increase in investment.(3) At the end of the year the U.S. had 2,478 operation biogas facilities, with at least one in each state. Of these, 566 sites convert biogas into renewable natural gas (RNG) – a sector that is growing year-on-year, while 1,418 produce electricity. Not only that, but there is significant scope for expansion.

Experts Call on Policy Makers to Secure and Accelerate the Injection of Growing Volumes of Sustainable European Biomethane

The Grid Ready Forum held yesterday in Brussels concludes with a set of key recommendations to speed up biomethane injection into Europe’s gas grids. The recommendations for the gas grid infrastructure can significantly contribute to Europe’s energy security and defossilisation objectives at a competitive cost. Grid injection will be key to realise the large future potential of biomethane production, fostering the growth of a homegrown renewable gas within Europe.

The adoption of the recommendations followed a full day of discussions that showed a critical need for cooperation between policymakers, regulators, and gas grid operators to accelerate biomethane injection. In this regard, the Forum calls for urgent action from national governments and regulators to implement the right to inject biomethane into the grids, as mandated in the 2024 Gas Package. Additionally, it supports the development of guidelines with regard to the “reasonable time limits” for grid connection.

First Public Biomethane Injection Point To Open in Latvia

This summer, the first public biomethane injection point in Latvia, connected to the gas transmission network, will be opened in Džūkste.

This will allow biomethane producers to deliver the gas they produce by truck and inject it into the common system even if there is no direct connection to the distribution or transmission network, according to the single gas transmission and storage system operator Conexus Baltic Grid (Conexus).

This is an important step in Conexus' sustainable development strategy, promoting the integration of green energy and more efficient use of local resources.

Doubling Down on Climate Leadership: WA Senate Votes to Strengthen Clean Fuels

On April 15, 2025, the Washington State Senate voted (25-23) to pass HB 1409 Concerning the Clean Fuel Standard (CFS), significantly improving Washington’s clean fuels program. The vote comes against the backdrop of recent federal attempts to stop state climate action, which has climate leaders and advocates naming state and local policymaking as the “final line of defense.”

House Majority Leader Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon (34th LD) was a key champion in getting the initial Clean Fuels program passed in 2021, and led this year’s push to pass an upgrade to the existing program. “With HB 1409, Washington is taking the next big step forward towards a clean transportation sector that protects our climate, our air quality, and our local economies,” he said. “Cleaner fuels will pay dividends for Washingtonians for years to come and further cement our status as a state leading the pack on climate action during a time of federal inaction and backsliding."

$1.00 RNG Motor Fuel Tax Credit Bill Introduced in U.S. Congress

the introduction by Senators Thom Tillis (R-NC) and Mark Warner (D-VA) and Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Linda Sánchez (D-CA) of the Renewable Natural Gas Incentive Act (S. 1252/H.R. 2596), a bipartisan and bicameral effort to provide a $1.00 per gallon tax credit for motor vehicles that use renewable natural gas (RNG) to further support cleaner and more efficient transportation across America.  Full text of the legislation can be found HERE.

“The Renewable Natural Gas Incentive Act is a smart investment in America’s energy independence and economic growth,” said Senator Tillis. “By expanding domestically produced renewable natural gas, we can reduce reliance on foreign energy and create good-paying jobs across the country.”

“Renewable natural gas continues to gain momentum as a clean, affordable, and reliable fuel source. I’m proud to introduce legislation that will help incentivize the use of RNG and continue to aid the transition to clean energy while boosting our economy and creating good-paying jobs,” said Senator Warner.
